Where the sidewalk ends.....Cornerstone For K.I.D.s begins
Need: "How can I help my K.I.D become an independent member of society?" Try this: CARVE A PATH Unfortunately this is a need that is far greater than it's solutions. Most stories of adult success of a K.I.D...particularly in the past two decades have been centered around the parent carving a path for the K.I.D. There are few, if any, resources in most communities to assist K.I.D.S with these kinds of needs. As our communities develop more pathways, you may need to take on a central role in finding out what your K.I.D. can and cannot do in the working world. Often the behaviors of this K.I.D. that constrains the options of employment disappear as the brain develops over time. My personal opinion is that a normal brain development that has a social deficit component is based on the development of the brain central core called the amygdyla. Its the "fight or flight" part of the brain. It's under-development and over sensitization causes many of the unique behaviors of K.I.D.S. This is why it is critical at the early ages to Sooth, Sooth Sooth the amygdyla. It doesn't grow well when under stress. It will grow eventually and from what I can tell, around age 30, K.I.D.S have much more control over this part of their disability. My guess is that by age 30, their social behaviors have reached about the ability of a young adult. If you can Shepard your K.I.D. or find a program that can do the same, you have a very good prognosis. K.I.D.s just need a little longer to care for and a path carved out for them longer than age 18. Our nonprofit is committed to opening possibilities in this age range and sharing constructive strategies that move a K.I.D. quicker to adult social skills by early intervention.
